Outdoor Manufactures, Retailers, Outdoorists and Native Americans are on the Front Lines of this epic confrontation between the issues of Public Lands vs Commercial Energy Extraction. Public Lands are in danger at this moment in history. For well over a 1,000 years these lands (Bears Ears) have been protected and preserved by the Native American Culture who perceive these lands as sacred sanctuaries generation after generation.
Bears Ears resides in Utah’s Southeastern part of the State adjacent to The Four Corners Area (Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona). In the 1860’s, just after the Civil War had its final devastation of America, a much larger war broke out. This war, The Indian Wars, tripled in size with the goal concerning the lands West of the Mississippi River. At that point, the Native American Tribes had found some coalition among the tribes, against a common enemy…The American and Mexican Militaries. The result came in the form of Indian Reservations, which never parallels the lands these tribes historically resided. Come forward in time to present day.
Bears Ears is supported by the Outdoor Industries, the majority of Outdoorists, Outdoor Retailer, OIA, Outdoor Loyalty, the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition (consisting of the Hopi Tribe, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Pueblo Zuni and Ute Indian Tribe and many supporters around the Globe. The Inter-Tribal Coalition was founded in 2015. These 5 Nations are committed to working together with goals to be protecting their sacred lands, working with the N.P.S. to defend the monument designation signed in to law by then President Barack Obama in December 2016 under The Antiquities Act of 1906.
The State of Utah and its current Legislative Body directed by Governor Gary Herbert has an agenda which is in direct conflict with the designation of Bears Ears Monument. They want to take over this area by eliminating it’s protection under Federal Law and place it in the State of Utah Trust Lands. By doing so, Utah would have control of what would become “Private Lands”. One of the mandates of Trust Lands is to generate revenue for the state. Taking the easy road, Utah could contract Mineral Extraction Companies, which would eventually destroy these sacred lands both visually and the delicate balance of sustainability for years and generations to come.
As this dynamic unfolds, as in the 1860’s, the Native American
Indians are being confronted by Washington D.C. Politics at work. The present Congress may decide to side with the State of Utah and dissolve the legal rights and protections of the residents of Bears Ears historical heritage for over 1,000 years. They will be forced back on the reservations they call home since the 1870’s.
Because of this calamity unfolding, Outdoor Retailer Show has chosen to look for new “hunting grounds” for their future shows. Along with OR, the largest bike show in the country has decided to side with O.R. and mutually merge and search for a city with links to the Great Outdoors (possibly Denver). Utah is turning its back on one of the most profitable shows (over $50 million) over ethically driven differences.
OutdoorLoyalty.com sides totally with the decisions being made by The OR Show. The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition continues it’s collaborative venture with the State of Utah, President Trump and Congress in hopes of protecting and preserving the Monument. We, as Outdoorists, need to keep the “fires of hope” burning by contacting your State and Federal Reps representing your interests and concerns by contacting Utah Indivisible advocacy group for help in this pursuit.
