One of the most successful Outdoorists of the Modern Era of the Outdoor Industry.  Royal left some giant climbing shoe prints for all of us to respect, revere and remember.  We all can share his ethics of the great outdoors.  One of those ethics is modern “clean climbing”.  He changed the mind set of climbers by introducing climbing nuts that replaced pitons thus reducing the intrusiveness of left behind climbing gear for those who followed.

Royal and Liz

Royal and Liz Robbins met in Yosemite National Park in the 60’s where Liz Burkner worked at Yosemite’s Ahwanee Hotel and Royal was emerging as one of the elite climbers.  They married and as a team  in 1965 launched Mountain Paraphernalia which became Royal Robbins Apparel and Gear.  Liz was the designer in house introducing the Billy Goat shorts, a precursor to both Cargo Shorts and 5.11 Tactical Pants.  They were a “team” in its truest form.

Our hearts go out to Liz and family for their loss.  Royal Robbins is scaling some 5.11 clouds looking down on us with that infectious smile of his.  R.I.P. Royal…
